What is ECDL and ICDL and why enroll for ICDL classes

The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL), also known as International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) in non European countries, is a globally recognised information and communication technology (ICT) and digital and computer literacy qualification programme provided by ECDL Foundation which is a not-for-profit organisation. In Kenya most Colleges and Institutions offer ICDL courses but still many people go for Computer Packages, I recommend ICDL. A 3 month course that can change your life.

Why I recommend ICDL?

ICDL programmes are for anyone who wishes to become fully competent in the use of a computer and common applications. Computer skills enable people of all ages to understand and use technology to improve their personal and professional lives. ICDL modules provide a practical programme of up-to-date skills and knowledge areas which are validated by a test unlike Computer Packages.

Since 2013, ICDL syllabus has been divided into 18 modules on three levels:
  • Base Modules
    • Computer Essentials
    • Online Essentials
    • Word Processing
    • Spreadsheets
  • Standard Modules
    • Presentation
    • Using Databases
    • IT Security
    • Online Collaboration
    • Image Editing
    • Web Editing
    • Project Planning
    • 2D Computer Aided Design
    • Health Information Systems Usage
    • ICT in Education
  • Advanced Modules
    • Advanced Word Processing
    • Advanced Spreadsheets
    • Advanced Database
    • Advanced Presentation

Original ECDL / ICDL

Before 2013 ECDL/ICDL syllabus was divided into seven modules. These are:
  • Security for IT Users
  • IT User Fundamentals (Windows Explorer in Windows 7)
  • Word processing (Microsoft Word 2010)
  • Spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel 2010)
  • Databases (Microsoft Access 2010)
  • Presentation program|Presentations (Microsoft PowerPoint 2010)
  • Using Email and the Internet (Windows Explorer in Windows 7)
Additionally, there was an Advanced version that was divided into four modules. These are:
  • Advanced Word Processing
  • Advanced Spread sheets
  • Advanced Presentation
  • Advanced Database

Testing

In order to take the tests, a candidate buys an ICDL Skills Card, which usually is issued electronically and serves as a login to the testing platform. To prepare for a module test, the candidate may use ICDL diagnostic tests. Testing is done using software which simulates the Windows/Microsoft Office environment. The candidate's mouse movements and keystrokes are monitored and the result of the test is reported immediately after the test is completed.

ICDL is available for everyone that is Individuals, Professionals/staff/employers and Schools

ICDL for Individuals

The ability to use a computer effectively is an essential life skill. Computer skills enable people of all ages to understand and use technology to improve their personal and professional lives. A computer skills certification can help the holder’s professional life by making them more attractive to employers, while increasing their ability to communicate and access information and services in their personal life.

ICDL for Employers and employees

Skilled employees enable organisations to use technology more effectively, leading to increases in productivity and competitiveness and ensuring that operational objectives are achieved more efficiently.  ICDL certification programmes are used to increase the value of human capital and achieve productivity gains through developing competent employees.

ICDL for Schools

Students with ICT skills enjoy an enriched educational experience and will be better prepared for life, work, and further learning. ICT skills enable teachers to use technology more effectively in the teaching process, thus achieving educational goals more efficiently, and in doing so save time and increase productivity in the classroom.
